Winter Weather Hydration

Winter is here with lots of outdoor fun! While Summer sports may work up more of a thirst, hydration is just as important when the air is bracing and cool.  We may sweat even more when bundled up to stay warm.  The dry atmosphere – inside and out – requires attention to hydration.

Dehydration can happen during any season.  Our bodies use water to properly regulate body temperature when we breathe cold air.  We lose even more water when we stay indoors in heated conditions.  And when participating in outdoor sports, sweat immediately turns to vapor instead of collecting on the skin.  It’s just that easy to become dehydrated.

Water is a vital nutrient involved in multiple organ functions, digestion and transportation.  Without it, we would not survive.  Water is responsible for lubricating joints, transporting oxygen and nutrients, controlling blood pressure, protecting skin, removing waste and moistening airways to facilitate breathing.  Since our bodies are composed of roughly 65% water, at just a 1-2% loss, signs of dehydration start to appear.  Fatigue, dizziness, headaches, drowsiness, nausea and muscle cramping are all signs of dehydration.  We lose 1-2 liters of water daily through urine alone, so it is important to replace the fluids lost in the equivalent amounts.

Steps to reach adequate hydration:

  • Aim for clear pale urine at fairly frequent intervals
  • Carry a water bottle wherever you go
  • Vegetables, fruits, milk, juices and soup will help meet hydration and nutrition needs
  • Hydrate before, during and after exercise

Signs of Dehydration:

  • Muscle cramping
  • Dark urine
  • Headaches, dizziness, fatigue
